Melfina is the leading female in the series. The very fact that she was found frozen inside of a high-tech-looking briefcase(?) told you that there was something mysterious about her. She knows nothing of her past, and like many other androids, seeks to learn of it. Her only source of information, Hilda, was killed in a fight with the Kei Pirates. She knows that the Kei Pirates want her for something that has to do with the Galactic Leyline. She feels that the key to her past is there. She is one of the reasons that Gene and his crew go there. When she first was awakened (unfrozen) she was a little confused. Gene was there to support her. Despite the initial sexual undertones of his attention, it seems he actually grew to care for her. Melfina feels very secure with him. When Harry first showed up, his enthusiasm and devotion was frightening. It seems that later on, after his many shows of devotion she was beginning to see some truth in his words. At some points it seems like she's about to go with him. But in the end she stays with Gene. Melfina plays an important part in the series, both structurally and asthetically. Her lack of past experiances and faults renders her "innocent", a damsel in distress, and a perfect prize for our characters to set their sights on. Her search to find herself and her past are a driving force for the "good guys." Her past and purpose also motivate the villians in their quest for the Leyline. The fact that she can navigate the Outlaw Star and open the Leyline also make her important.
